How Often Should You Have Your Dryer Vent Cleaned?

October 07, 2026•4 min read

Most homeowners know to clean the lint screen after every load, but the dryer vent itself is easy to forget.

The vent carries hot, moist air and lint from your dryer to the outside of your home. Over time, lint can build up inside the vent and restrict airflow.

So how often should you have it professionally cleaned?

How Often Should Your Dryer Vent Be Cleaned?

For most homes, once a year is a good general guideline. That doesn't mean every dryer vent needs to be cleaned exactly every 12 months, but annual cleaning is a good habit for a typical household.

Some homes may benefit from cleaning more often. A family running several loads every day will put much more lint and moisture through the vent than a household that only uses the dryer a few times a week.

The vent itself matters too. A short, straight vent run is different from a long system with several bends and turns, where lint can have more opportunities to collect.

If you've never had your dryer vent professionally cleaned, or it's been several years since the last cleaning, I think it's worth having it checked.

Why Does a Dryer Vent Need to Be Cleaned?

Your lint screen catches a lot of the lint from your clothes, but it doesn't catch everything. Some lint makes its way into the exhaust system and can gradually build up inside the vent.

As that buildup increases, airflow can become restricted. The dryer may take longer to dry clothes, run hotter, or require multiple cycles.

There is also a safety reason to keep the vent clean. Lint is combustible, and restricted airflow can contribute to overheating. Dryer fires are a real concern, which is why regular vent maintenance is recommended as part of normal dryer care.

What Are the Signs Your Dryer Vent Needs Cleaning?

One of the biggest signs is your clothes aren't drying like they used to.

If a load that normally dries in one cycle suddenly needs two or three, it's worth paying attention to.

Other signs can include:

  • The dryer feels unusually hot

  • The laundry room gets hotter than normal

  • A burning or unusual smell

  • Poor airflow from the exterior vent

  • Lint accumulating around the dryer or outside vent

  • Drying times gradually getting longer

These signs don't automatically mean the vent is clogged. Dryer problems can have other causes too. But they're good reasons to have the exhaust system inspected.

Does Cleaning the Lint Screen Keep the Vent Clean?

No. The lint screen and dryer vent are two different things.

You should clean the lint screen after every load, but some lint still makes it past the filter and into the exhaust system.

Think of it this way:

Cleaning the lint screen is everyday maintenance. Cleaning the dryer vent is periodic maintenance.

Both are important.

What Does Professional Dryer Vent Cleaning Do?

Professional dryer vent cleaning is designed to remove accumulated lint and debris from the exhaust path between the dryer and the exterior vent.

We use specialized equipment to loosen and remove buildup rather than simply pushing it farther down the vent.

We also look at the overall setup while we're there. If we find something like a damaged vent, significant restriction, or another issue that cleaning won't solve, we'll point it out.

That's important because cleaning can't fix every dryer problem. Sometimes the dryer itself needs service, or the vent system needs to be repaired or modified.

Does the Length of the Vent Matter?

Absolutely.

A dryer located against an exterior wall may have a short, relatively straight exhaust path. Another dryer might have a much longer route with several bends before reaching the outside.

The longer and more complicated the vent, the more important proper airflow becomes.

It's one reason two homes with similar dryer usage can have completely different cleaning needs.

A Simple Maintenance Step That's Easy to Forget

A dryer vent is easy to overlook because most of it is hidden. You don't see the buildup accumulating inside, and sometimes the first indication that there's a problem is simply that your clothes aren't drying as quickly as they used to.

For most homes, annual dryer vent cleaning is a good general recommendation, but your dryer usage and vent setup can affect how often it needs attention.

If your dryer is taking longer to dry clothes, the system feels unusually hot, or you've never had the vent professionally cleaned, it's worth having it checked.

Regular dryer vent cleaning is a relatively simple piece of preventative maintenance that can help keep your dryer operating properly and your exhaust system clear.
