Can You Steam Clean an Area Rug? What You Should Know Before Cleaning It

If your area rug is looking dull, dirty, or stained, you may be wondering: Can you steam clean an area rug?

The answer is yes—most area rugs can be professionally cleaned using hot water extraction, commonly referred to as steam cleaning. However, the way a rug is cleaned can make a big difference in the results.

At Quick Nick’s Cleaning, we clean area rugs in the customer's home using a truck-mounted hot water extraction system. We use appropriate temperature, reduced moisture, and powerful suction to remove dirt and stains while helping the rug dry properly.

Here’s what you should know before having your area rug cleaned.

What Does “Steam Cleaning” an Area Rug Mean?

When people talk about “steam cleaning” a rug, they’re usually referring to hot water extraction (HWE) rather than cleaning with vapor steam.

With hot water extraction, heated water and cleaning solution are used to loosen dirt from the fibers. The solution and loosened soil are then removed using powerful vacuum extraction.

That last part is important. Good rug cleaning isn’t just about applying cleaning solution. You also need enough extraction power to remove the moisture and the dirt that comes with it.

Can Every Area Rug Be Steam Cleaned?

In most cases, yes. Most area rugs can be safely and effectively cleaned using hot water extraction, though there are a few exceptions.

Some rugs have unstable dyes that can bleed when exposed to moisture. This can occur with certain antique, handmade, and specialty rugs, including some Oriental rugs.

One way to check for potential dye bleeding is to press a damp white cloth against an inconspicuous area of the rug for about 20 seconds. Check the cloth for any color transfer, and repeat the test for each color. Red and dark blue dyes, in particular, can be more prone to bleeding.

If you notice color transferring to the cloth, avoid wet cleaning until you’ve consulted a qualified rug-cleaning professional. Some companies transport rugs to specialized facilities, where they may be able to use a cleaning method better suited to the rug. Keep in mind that this test can help identify potential dye problems, but it doesn’t guarantee that the rug’s colors will remain stable throughout the cleaning process.

Why Is Area Rug Cleaning Different From Carpet Cleaning?

Unlike wall-to-wall carpet, an area rug isn’t permanently attached to the floor. That means the flooring underneath it also needs to be considered during cleaning.

We adjust our approach based on the rug and the surface beneath it. For example, a rug on tile may be cleaned right where it sits, while extra care may be needed with rugs on hardwood.

If a rug is very thin, has no backing, or is on hardwood and moisture is a concern, we may move it to the driveway or another suitable outdoor area before cleaning it.

The rug is still cleaned at your home. We simply choose the most appropriate location for the job.

How Are Area Rugs Professionally Cleaned?

When we clean an area rug, we bring our truck-mounted hot water extraction equipment directly to your home.

The truck-mounted machine stays outside while we bring the hoses and cleaning tools inside. This gives us the extraction power of our truck-mounted system without having to transport the rug to a separate facility.

Before cleaning, we inspect the rug and determine how it should be handled. If there is heavier soil, staining, or an odor problem, those areas can be pre-treated before extraction.

We then use appropriate temperature and reduced moisture to clean the rug. The truck-mounted vacuum extracts the cleaning solution, loosened dirt, and moisture from the fibers.

When needed, we can make additional dry passes to remove as much remaining moisture as possible.

The goal is to clean the rug thoroughly while removing as much moisture as reasonably possible during the process.

Why Have an Area Rug Cleaned On Site?

For many homeowners, the biggest advantage is convenience.

Your rug doesn’t have to be picked up, transported somewhere else, cleaned, and delivered back later. We bring the cleaning equipment to you.

It also means you can see the cleaning process firsthand and have your rug cleaned without sending it away.

Can You Steam Clean an Area Rug Yourself?

You can rent an extraction machine and clean some area rugs yourself, but there are a few things worth considering.

The biggest challenge is moisture management. If too much water is used or not enough is extracted, the rug can take much longer to dry, and moisture can reach the flooring underneath.

It’s not uncommon for customers to call us after attempting to clean a rug themselves and accidentally overwetting it, which can make the situation worse rather than better. Without enough extraction power, it can be difficult to remove the moisture that was put into the rug.

For a relatively durable synthetic rug, DIY cleaning may be reasonable. But if you’re dealing with heavy staining, pet odors, an expensive rug, or you’re simply not sure how the rug will react to cleaning, professional cleaning can take much of the guesswork out of the process.

So, Can You Steam Clean an Area Rug?

Yes—most area rugs can be professionally steam cleaned using hot water extraction.

The important thing is using the right process for the rug and keeping moisture under control during cleaning.

At Quick Nick’s Cleaning, we bring our truck-mounted cleaning equipment directly to your home and clean on site. Depending on the rug and the flooring underneath it, we may clean it right where it sits or move it to a more suitable area, such as the driveway.

With appropriate temperature, reduced moisture, and powerful extraction, most area rugs found in everyday homes can be thoroughly cleaned without having to send them away to a separate facility.

If you’re wondering whether your particular area rug is a good candidate for professional on-site cleaning, we’d be happy to take a look.
