Can Professional Upholstery Cleaning Remove Pet Odors and Stains?

If you have pets, you probably already know how quickly a couch or upholstered chair can start showing it.

Pet hair is easy to see, but the bigger problem is often what you can't see. Dirt, oils, drool, and pet accidents can work their way into the fabric and cushions over time. Eventually, you may start noticing stains, a lingering pet smell, or that the furniture just doesn't look as fresh as it used to.

As a professional upholstery cleaner, one of the most common questions I get is:

Can professional upholstery cleaning actually remove pet stains and odors?

The short answer is yes, in many cases—but it depends on what happened, how long ago it happened, and how deeply the contamination has penetrated the upholstery.

Here's what I've learned from cleaning upholstered furniture in real homes.

Can Professional Upholstery Cleaning Remove Pet Stains?

Professional upholstery cleaning can remove a surprising amount of pet-related staining.

Fresh accidents are generally easier to deal with because the urine or other contamination hasn't had as much time to penetrate into the fabric and cushion.

Older stains can be more difficult. Over time, a pet accident can soak through the upholstery fabric and into the cushion underneath. Once that happens, cleaning the surface alone may not completely address the problem.

That doesn't mean an old stain is impossible to remove. It simply means the results depend on how deeply it has penetrated and whether the carpet or upholstery fibers have been permanently affected.

I've cleaned plenty of upholstery that looked like it was beyond saving and was surprised by how much better it looked after a proper cleaning.

Can Upholstery Cleaning Remove Pet Odors?

This is where professional cleaning can make a particularly noticeable difference.

Pet odors aren't always sitting on the surface of the fabric. If an accident has penetrated into the cushion, simply cleaning the outside of the upholstery may not be enough.

For pet-related odors, we may use an enzyme treatment designed to break down the organic material contributing to the odor before performing the main cleaning.

Treating upholstery with enzymes helps break down stains and neutralize odors.

The goal isn't to simply cover the smell with a fragrance. It's to address the source as much as the condition of the upholstery allows.

However, there's an important limitation: if a large amount of urine has soaked deeply into the cushion or other materials underneath, complete odor removal may not always be possible through surface upholstery cleaning alone.

Why Do Pet Stains Sometimes Come Back After Cleaning?

One of the most frustrating things for a homeowner is seeing a stain disappear during cleaning and then notice it coming back later.

This is often called wicking.

When upholstery dries, moisture from deeper in the material can move toward the surface and bring some of the remaining soil or staining with it. This can make an old stain appear to return even though it was significantly improved during the cleaning process.

This is one reason professional upholstery cleaning isn't simply about spraying a product on a stain and wiping it away.

The type of stain, how deep it is, how much moisture is present, and how the upholstery dries can all affect the final result.

What About Pet Odors That Aren't From Urine?

Not every pet odor comes from an accident.

Dogs and cats naturally leave behind oils, dander, saliva, and other organic material. Add in the dirt they track onto furniture, and an upholstered couch can accumulate quite a bit over time.

This is especially noticeable on furniture that pets regularly sleep or lie on.

A thorough upholstery cleaning can remove much of this buildup and leave the furniture looking and smelling significantly fresher.

Does Professional Upholstery Cleaning Remove Every Pet Stain?

No—and I think it's important to be honest about that.

Professional cleaning can make a dramatic difference, but not every stain is removable.

Some stains permanently change the color of the fabric. Others may have been caused by dyes, chemicals, bleach, or prolonged exposure to a substance that has damaged the fibers.

Pet urine can also cause permanent discoloration in some fabrics, especially when an accident has been present for a long time.

That's why I never want to promise that every stain will disappear before seeing the furniture.

A good professional should be able to look at the upholstery, identify what they're dealing with, and give you realistic expectations before cleaning.

Is It Safe to Have a Couch Professionally Cleaned?

Yes, when the proper cleaning method is used for the specific upholstery.

Not every piece of furniture should be cleaned the same way. The fabric, construction, condition, and previous treatments all matter.

Before cleaning, the upholstery should be inspected to determine whether professional cleaning is appropriate and what approach makes sense.

This is also why I don't recommend trying to heavily saturate an upholstered couch with a household carpet machine or excessive amounts of cleaning solution. Upholstery can be much less forgiving than carpet, and over-wetting can create additional problems.

What Should You Do If Your Pet Has an Accident on the Couch?

If you catch the accident while it's still fresh, the best thing you can do is remove as much moisture as possible without aggressively scrubbing it.

Use a clean, absorbent towel and blot the area.

The biggest mistake is often scrubbing aggressively. That can spread the contamination and work it farther into the fabric.

If the accident is significant or the odor remains after you've cleaned the surface, that's when it's worth having the upholstery professionally inspected.

The sooner the problem is addressed, the better the chances of getting a good result.

So, Is Professional Upholstery Cleaning Worth It for Pet Owners?

In my experience, absolutely.

If your pets spend a lot of time on the furniture, regular upholstery cleaning can remove the dirt, oils, dander, and other buildup that accumulates long before the couch looks extremely dirty.

And when there has been a pet accident, professional cleaning gives you a much better chance of improving both the stain and the odor than simply cleaning the surface yourself.

Just keep in mind that professional cleaning isn't magic. The age of the stain, the type of fabric, how deeply the contamination has penetrated, and whether the fibers have been permanently discolored all affect the results.

If your couch has pet stains or odors that you can't seem to get rid of, professional upholstery cleaning may be able to make a significant difference.

And sometimes, furniture that looks like it needs to be replaced simply needs a really good cleaning first.
